Canalis has published Its preliminary estimates for smartphone shipments in the third quarter of Q3 2021, suggest that users should not expect high-end Black Friday deals on these devices later this year.
Research firm’s data shows that global smartphone shipments fell 6 percent year-on-year between July 2021 and September 2021, as manufacturers struggled to meet demand amid component shortages.
“The famine of the chip set has really hit,” said Canalys principal analyst Ben Stanton.
“The smartphone industry is trying to produce as many devices as possible across devices.”
“On the supply side, chipsets are pushing manufacturers to eliminate over orders in an effort to close the gap between supply and demand,” he explained.
Nevertheless, Stanton hopes the shortage will continue “well into 2022”.
“As a result, as well as the high cost of global goods, smartphone brands attribute unwanted device retail prices,” Stanton said.
He added that many retail and distribution channels are nervous about key sales holidays, such as singles in China and Black Friday in the west.
Stanton said: “Smartphone’s channel inventory is already declining, and as more and more customers begin to anticipate these sales cycles, it will be impossible to meet the next wave of demand.”
As a result, customers should expect that smartphone discounts will be lower by 2021.
He recommends that smartphone brands that are restricted to the margins should see that the bundled wearables and IoT devices are available to the customer as the customer gets the customer motivation.
In its Q3 Market Plus, Canonicals found that Samsung remains the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, with 23% market share, similar to Q3 during 2020.
Apple took the place from Xiaomi, with its share of Wi-Fi 12% to 15%, due to strong initial demand for the iPhone 13, launched in late September.
Xiaomi’s share remained flat at 14%, while other Chinese or Chinese giants – Vivo and Oppo – rounded out the top 5.
