Google blocks SMS alert for calendar

Google Calendar on mobile

At the beginning of January 2019, you will no longer be able to receive notifications about Google Calendar events. The change will affect Android and iOS users.

While Google does not provide an explicit reason to block SMS notifications – besides seemingly not willing to offer too much to receive notifications – the company says users should not notice any differences due to notifications in the app.

The transition from SMS to notification in the application comes on January 7, and will be seamless. Google Calendar users will not have to make any changes. Anyone who currently relies on text messages to recall future events will find that they are simply replaced by another form of notification.

Google explains:

No SMS notifications from Google Calendar will be available on 7 January 2019. Because Calendar offers notifications in your app, you can still receive notifications regardless of your device or connection.

If you have previously received a calendar notification via SMS, it will be replaced by notifications in the application and by e-mail.

The company explains when Google Calendar users will see announcements from next year:

  • As an event alert in a web browser that has an open calendar, or on a mobile device, if you have the Google Calendar app for Android or iOS.
  • In e-mail, if you have set SMS notifications for new events, changed events, canceled events, or event responses.
