SINGAPORE – The High Commission of the Republic of Malaysia described an online article linking Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal as a fake news and insult.
The article on Wednesday (November 7th) was posted on The Coverage's website, which is described as a "social news network based in Malaysia". The article source was listed as "Straight Review" and was associated with a similar article on the States Times Review.
In response to Malaysian media inquiries, the Singapore Chief Executive of Malaysia appealed to an article titled "Breaking News: Singapore Lee Hsien Loong becomes a key investigative target of 1MDB – Najib signed with Hsien Loonge a few unfair deals in exchange for money laundering" and said: "The High Commission of the Republic of Singapore in Malaysia would categorically declare that this article is a false report and clearly defamatory."
Najib Razak, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, faces corruption charges of misappropriation of funds from 1MDB, a state investment instrument set up in 2009.
